About Unplaced Bins

We are posting here to apologize to several participants whose recycling bins were not placed as originally requested via the Don’t Be A Tosser Place a Bin program. Our terms of service state “Not all bin placement requests are guaranteed” and unfortunately we were unable to install some effectively. There are several possible reasons for this, including another bin being placed in close proximity or our inability to secure permission to place bins on certain public and private properties. We are working with our local bottle depots and hope to get the bins redeployed to other locations around Alberta in ways that complement existing municipal and private recycling programs.

We wish to thank you for your support in the Don’t Be A Tosser Place A Bin program. Your efforts contribute to 82.3% of Alberta’s beverage containers avoiding the landfill. This ranks us as the #1 province in Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my bin not get placed?

There are several possible reasons why your bin did not get placed:

  • The position requested was too close to another bin already placed.
  • We were unable to get permission to place the bin on public or private property.
  • We were not able to find a volunteer organization to commit to regular servicing of the bin in that specific location.
  • The bin was placed, but has since been removed or possibly stolen.
  • The charitable aspect of the Place a Bin program conflicted with an existing beverage container recycling program at that location.
  • But I got a message that said it was approved?

Several people got messages that their bins were approved, but that was actually only the first step in the process. Several bins were placed in locations that appeared appropriate, but after installation we were requested to remove the bins by property owners.

Where will my bin end up?

We are still working on getting the bins placed around Alberta in approved locations that can be serviced by local charitable organizations.

Why are there posters still advertising the program?

We have removed all of the posters and advertisements that we have control over; however, there are some locations, particularly at universities and colleges, that posted promotional materials but have not yet removed them. In addition, the Place a Bin function has been removed from the website.
